Most venues now have a good idea that today's couple are looking for three things: choice, value for money and above all, quality. Whilst all venues will say they can provide this, it is a risk, and the best way of managing this risk is to go with your personal experience (hire a venue or caterer you have experienced yourself) or by asking to taste a sample menu. You should also ask for proof of satisfied customers as well.
First steps
-
Food will play a big part in deciding on your venue, but it won't be the only factor so when searching for your venue, have a list of questions specifically about their catering arrangements
-
When searching for information, look for sample menus, testimonies on their service and a good wine list
-
Ask about dates and the possibility of sampling their menu
-
Ask if it is possible to speak to the chef themselves when going through the menu options
-
If your budget is tight, don't be afraid of asking for ideas from the caterers - they are used to it! Good cost saving options include having a buffet instead of a formal sit down meal, serving cake instead of pudding, having the house wines, sitting down to dinner later in the day to avoid having an evening buffet and having sparkling wine instead of champagne
-
Watch out for small print when choosing the venue. Often there are clauses which stipulate a welcome drink for everyone, a buffet portion for everyone, no corkage etc. It should not be a hard task to negotiate around these but be wary of factoring in your costs without reading the small print or talking through the options with the venue or caterer
