The Best Man's Speech

This is the response to the toast to the bridesmaids and it is the speech that people are waiting for as it is traditionally humorous and a little risqué. An apparently effortless speech is what is wanted and that actually means a lot of effort. Avoid an "off-the-cuff" approach as it will sound disjointed and you may, under the pressure, say something that you'd rather not or forget something you shouldn't. Again, it cannot be stressed enough, there are some no-nos:

  • Do not try too hard to be funny - one obvious joke is enough; it is not a talent contest

  • Do not mention sex

  • Do not swear

  • Do not mention either past girlfriends or boyfriends or escapades in which they were involved (the Groom does not want to be reminded of others on his wedding day)

  • Do not be rude about the family or in-laws

  • Do not break any secrets or confidences

Some things you must do:

  • Say how much and why you like the Groom

  • Say what an honour it was to be asked to be the Best Man

  • Say how beautiful the Bride is

  • Remember you are responding on behalf of the bridesmaids so mention them too

  • Mention any housekeeping at the end - for example, is everyone to vacate the room for it to be turned around for dancing

  • End on a sincere note wishing them every happiness

  • The final toast is: "To the Bride and Groom!"
