The Best Man's Duties

This list is not exhaustive, and is available as a checklist (with some extra helpful bits) in our book:

  • Pick up buttonholes

  • Get dressed first so you can help the Groom

  • Get the Groom to the church

  • Look after the rings and provide them at the right moment

  • Look after the honeymoon documents if necessary

  • Look after any money payments e.g. for the transportation or band on the day

  • Get the Groom in place at the church

  • Go to the vestry as a witness to sign the wedding register

  • Get everyone organised for the wedding photographer

  • Get the bride and Groom to the car and off to the reception

  • Pay the marriage fees if appropriate

  • At the reception, make sure everyone is being looked after

  • Help get people to the receiving line at the appropriate time

  • If a toastmaster has not been engaged to do the job, act as master of ceremonies, announcing the main items e.g. "Please be upstanding for the Bride and Groom" as they enter the reception

  • Reply to the toast of "the bridesmaids" by the Groom

  • Read out any telegrams or cards as part of your speech

  • See the couple off with their documents and luggage at the appropriate time

  • Ensure parting guests are looked after where necessary

  • Collect the Grooms wedding clothes and return them to the hire shop if necessary

  • Ensure the wedding presents are collected and stored somewhere safe until they return from honeymoon

Many best men feel like general-factotums on the day so be prepared to be busy!
